Your Oriental & Wool Area Rugs are beautiful works of art.   They are also valuable investments.   Because Oriental Rugs are constructed differently than regular carpeting, they should not be cleaned by the same method.

Oriental area rug cleaning (rug washing) is a completely different process than carpet cleaning. The process is much more time consuming and requires a purpose built facility to do the work correctly. A Clean Solution has recently built a facility specifically for wool rug cleaning.  The facility has an examination area, a dry soil removal station, a wash pit, a drying chamber and a detailing area.  Because we don't have any of these resources available to us while out on calls, proper oriental rug cleaning can not be performed at the clients location.

The only way to effectively deep clean the heavy pile of an oriental rug is to have them cleaned by a professional In Plant process that includes dry soil removal (dusting) and a thorough flushing with water.

Note:  All rugs that come into out shop are individually hand washed.  Other companies will put your rug with upto 10 other rugs (that could have pet urine or mold contamination) in a washing drum at the same time.  This is not a safe process for cleaning your valuable treasures.

Our Oriental Rug Washing process:
  1. Examination - A thorough examination of the rug is performed.   We look for any damage that may need to be brought to the owner's attention before any work begins.
  2. Dusting -   The rug gets a thorough dusting. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IN THE PROCESS AND MUST NOT BE SKIPPED. This removes the harmful dry soils that are compacted in the base yarns of the rug. Oriental rugs can hold 1 pound or more of dry soil per square foot.  These soils hold odors and can cut the base yarns and the face fibers causing holes and poor appearance.  These soils can not be vacuumed out, they can only be removed by dusting. (Many rug cleaning companies miss this step) SEE PICTURE BELOW
  3. Dye Bleed Testing -  This step lets us determine the dye stability in the rug.
  4. Preconditioning -   The rugs are preconditioneded with dye setters and an ORGANIC pre cleaning agent.   Dye setters lock the color dyes in place so that they don't bleed onto each other.
  5. Wash & Rinse - this process flushes soils and contaminates from the rug.   Cold water is used in the ORGANIC wash and rinse to keep the dyes from bleeding onto each other.   STEAM cleaning can cause color bleeding and fiber degredation.
  6. Protector Application  -  Provides soil and stain protection for the rug fibers.
  7. Drying - The rugs are dried in a controlled chamber with air movers, dehumidifiers and heat.
  8. Detailing - The fringes and face fibers are detailed and the rug prepared for return.
  9. Allergen Treatment   - Optional hypoallergenic treatment to control dust mites and animal dander.

A common request we receive is to clean rugs that have pet urine in them.   This involves an additional process that is done between step 4 and step 5.   The process involves submerging the wool rug in a urine and odor neutralizer for up to 8 hours.   This is done because wool is a porous natural fiber.   When pet urine is deposited on the rug, the fibers absorb it all the way to the core of the fiber.   A standard rug cleaning will clean the outside of the fiber, but will not neutralize the odor in the core of the fiber.   Many of our new clients call us with rugs that have been cleaned by other oriental rug cleaners, but still have a bad odor.   Often, the rugs were surface cleaned with no attention paid to the odor problem, or they were cleaned at the customer's location where proper decontamination can not be performed..

Pet urine situations can not be fixed with an on site cleaning.   They MUST go through a thorough in-plant rug cleaning process.

Another common question we receive is: Can the rugs be cleaned at our location?   The answer is: To a degree.

On site oriental rug cleaning can be performed, but only the rug face fibers are being cleaned. Very little of the deeply embedded contaminates (those that do the most damage) are being removed.

The picture below is an example of a rug that was brought to our shop after it had been cleaned at the customers location by another rug cleaner.   The rug appeared clean, but had a bad odor.   After the dusting step, we found the odor.   All of the compacted soils and debris were holding the odors.

The above picture represents why on site rug cleaning is not a good idea and why the only way to effectively deep clean the heavy pile of an oriental rug is to have them cleaned by a professional In Plant process like ours that includes dusting and a thorough flushing with water.
